Firenze (Florence)

Arriving at Firenze at about 4pm, we started our tour with a bubbly tour guide who was really proud of her city.

These are facades of Santa Maria del Fiore. We were told that this building was an inspiration to many artists during the Italian renaissance. In my opinion, this beautiful church is only second to the Duomo in Milano.

As mentioned, no courtyard is complete without a bell tower and a baptistery. At least the Italians got the tower straight this time around.

This octagonal dome is the baptistery.

These doors are the famous 'gates of paradise'. They are named as such because baptism is believed to lead to salvation.

Unfortunately for us, it was drizzling when we were in Firenze. The cold winds and our wet feet made the city tour less pleasant for all of us.

We went to the town hall of Florence where the Palazzo Vecchio stood...

...took photographs with a replica of David...

...with dead kings from the house of Medici...

...and of other renaissance masterpieces.

We popped by at San Lorenzo market to toss more coins, in hope that we would return to Italy, while we watched the shops close for the day.

Sighs!
